Heaven 17 – Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory

Renowned 1980s new wave band Heaven 17 are topping the bill at this year’s Dundee Rotary Oktoberfest.

The Sheffield group whose single Temptation reached No 2 in the UK charts in 1982 are the headline performers on the final night of this year’s festival taking place at Slessor Gardens from Thursday, September 26 to Saturday September 28, 2019.

Dundee Rotary Club are thrilled to secure the band who have re-formed with original members,  Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory, for what they hope will be the biggest and best Oktoberfest yet.

UK Queen tribute group Magic Queen

We are also delighted to have top UK Queen tribute group Magic Queen perform as the headline act on the Friday night.

Heaven 17 and Magic Queen will be supported by no less than 12 local bands over the three nights and one afternoon in what has become one of the biggest annual events in Dundee’s entertainment calendar.

This year will be the ninth Dundee Rotary Oktoberfest – a festival of beer, music and German food – and all for charity and other good causes.

Last year the event moved from its first setting of Discovery Quay to the bigger Waterfront venue of Slessor Gardens.

It was a major charity fundraising success, attracting more than 2,500 people with the biggest crowd converging on the venue on the closing night for the performance by pop and indie rock group the Magic Numbers.

It raised in excess of £26,000 for good causes, including Dundee Stroke Exercise Club, Brae Riding, Insight Counselling, Friends of the Botanic Garden, Quilts & Co and transport for school and community groups’ trips.

Organisers hope the 2019 festival can be as successful and are hoping to be similarly generous to local charitable ventures and other good causes.

CHALLENGES

The upscaling of last year’s event represented considerable challenges for the organisers and although overall it was a success, there were aspects which they admit could have gone better.

The Dundee Rotarians have worked hard to learn from 2018 and for this year’s festival they aim to implement a number of improvements.

The new measures include:

  • A bigger main marquee
  • A higher stage for better visibility
  • A section with tables and chairs on a first-come-first-serve basis
  • No separate VIP section
  • A redesigned bar aimed at serving customers more quickly
  • Holding drinks and German barbecue food prices at £4

The Thursday night will again, primarily be a corporate evening, with performances by the groups Pretty Verdant, The Vintage Girls, Sound Machine and Jive Candy. Non -corporate guests are more than welcome to attend the Thursday and enjoy the local bands as well as the beers and food. It is a different evening with a slightly different atmosphere – not so many people and without the Headline Bands, but still great fun and a little less expensive!

Friday will be the first of the general public nights with performances by Rock Bottom and the Messarounds before Magic Queen come on stage for two hours of Queen classics at 9pm.

Saturday afternoon will feature Fizzle Chimps, Captain Jack, Sonnet 65 and Interceptors.

The Saturday evening session will open with Paper Tiger to be followed by Miami Vince before Heaven 17 take the stage for a two-hour set at 9pm.
